Leftover keypad after buying a Knoxville house? Photograph it before you pull it

You closed on a Knoxville house and there is a keypad in the hallway. Maybe it still has a faded sticker. Maybe the screen is dark. Maybe the last owner said “the alarm is there, you just call somebody.” None of that is monitoring. A leftover keypad is equipment. ADT monitoring is a service you order. Home Security Systems Knoxville takes that order on (865) 500-6003. SafeStreets is the ADT Authorized Provider that installs or reactivates. ADT monitors 24/7.

Photograph the panel before you pry it off the drywall. That is the whole first instruction. A picture tells a specialist whether we can often keep the equipment, whether we are looking at a builder leftover, or whether the cleanest path is a new professionally installed system. Pulling it first turns a one-visit reactivation into a patch job and a full replace.

Photograph it before you pull it

Take three photos: the keypad straight on, the keypad with the cover off if it opens without tools, and the wiring closet, utility room, or basement board if you can see it. Include the brand on the plastic if there is one. Include any account number sticker. Do not reset anything. Do not call a random 800 number on the sticker and “cancel” an account you do not own. You just bought the house. You do not yet know whether that account is live, dead, or in someone else’s name.

There is no form on this site. You bring the photos to the 865 call. The specialist looks at them while you say the ZIP. 37919 Sequoyah Hills is not 37934 Farragut. 37932 Hardin Valley is not 37916 Fort Sanders. 37830 Oak Ridge is not a Knoxville city form. The photo plus the ZIP is the start of the quote.

If a painter is coming tomorrow and wants the hallway clean, photograph tonight. A painted-over hole is not a reason to skip monitoring. It is a reason the technician may be hanging a new panel instead of keeping the old one. That can still be a $99 install* on many plans. It is just no longer the fastest path.

What a leftover panel actually is

Sometimes it is a prior owner’s professionally installed system that was never taken off the wall. Sometimes it is a builder “included alarm” from a Farragut, Hardin Valley, or West Knox plat — a keypad that satisfied a closing checklist and was never put on 24/7 monitoring. Sometimes it is a DIY kit the last owner abandoned. Those three things look similar from the sofa. They are not the same job.

A prior ADT or other professionally installed panel can often be reactivated or reused. A builder leftover can often be reused too, once someone actually orders monitoring. A dead DIY kit is more often a replace. The photo is how we stop guessing. The quote is how you hear whether this is a reactivation or a new SafeStreets install.

The leftover panel is not “free ADT.” ADT is the monitoring company after the system is live on an agreement. SafeStreets has to see the hardware, test it, and connect it. Until that happens, the keypad is décor. A thief does not care that the last owner meant to call. A yard sign in the bushes does not care either.

Builder leftovers versus a prior owner’s system

Farragut and Hardin Valley new-builds are where we see builder leftovers every week. The keypad was in the option sheet. The builder’s sub hung it. Nobody ordered monitoring. The closing attorney’s list said “alarm.” You moved in and assumed ADT was already watching. It was not. Builder leftover keypads are not ADT until you order monitoring. That article is the new-construction version. This article is the resale version. Same photo. Same 865 call.

Older Knoxville houses — Sequoyah Hills, Bearden, Fountain City, Fourth and Gill, Island Home — more often have a prior owner’s panel. Maybe it was monitored last year. Maybe it was monitored in 2019 and the account died at closing. Maybe the last owner self-monitored on a phone app and left the plastic. We can often keep sensors that still work. We do not keep a dead account in someone else’s name. You order a new agreement. Typically 36 months at promotional rates. Early termination fees apply. Credit approval applies. Offers are for homeowners.

A downtown 37902 condo panel can be a third thing: an association device, a prior tenant’s kit, or a board-owned system you are not allowed to touch. House versus condo is a quote question. Do not pull a condo panel until you know who owns it.

Do not cancel what you do not own

The sticker on the keypad may still show a dealer that is not SafeStreets and is not this site. Calling that number and “canceling ADT” because you bought the house is how people accidentally hang up on a live account, or fail to hang up on an account that was already dead, or start a fight with a company about equipment you just painted over. Photograph. Call (865) 500-6003. Let the specialist tell you what the photo is.

If the last owner’s monitoring is still live, that is a transfer conversation, not a vandalism conversation. If it is dead, it is a new order. If it was never monitored, it is a first order that happens to have a head start on wire. Those three sentences save a Saturday. They also save you from telling Knox 911 that you are the alarm user on a system that is still in the seller’s name.

City of Knoxville registration is a separate form after the system is yours. Inside the city, you register through Knox 911. The last owner’s confirmation email is not your registration. File in your name after we make the system live. Knox 911 registration is that paper. Do not skip it because a sticker is already on the plastic.

What the quote sounds like when there is already a panel

You will still hear a monthly number, an install charge, and the agreement length. Promotional packages start at $53.99/mo* for ADT Secure+, then Smart+ $63.99*, Complete+ $74.99*. Many plans have a $99 install*. A leftover panel does not automatically make the monthly number $0. Monitoring is the product. Equipment reuse can keep the install in the $99 conversation. Cameras you add on Complete+ can still raise the install. Ask.

Have the same facts you would have for a blank wall: ZIP, house versus condo, rough door and slider count, cameras yes or no. Then the photos. If the last owner left a binder, bring the account number but do not assume it is still good. If the house is empty because you have not moved from Oak Ridge yet, say the occupancy date. Same-day or next-day is common in the TN – Knoxville territory when the calendar is open. We would rather hang the monitoring the week you sleep there than the week the painter wants the hallway empty.

How much ADT is in Knoxville is the plan math. The leftover does not invent a fifth plan. It changes whether we reuse hardware.

Sensors on the doors may still be good

A hallway keypad is the part people see. The useful parts are often the contacts on the front door, the slider, and the garage walk-through. If those still close a circuit, a technician can save time. If a prior owner painted over a window contact, we will find it. If a Fort Sanders renter (not you — this promotion is for homeowners) yanked a sensor on the way out, we will replace it. The walkthrough is how we know. The photo is how we guess well enough to quote.

Smoke and CO are a Secure+ conversation even if the old panel had a dusty detector that has not been tested since the last inspection. Do not assume the leftover life-safety device is still a life-safety device. Ask for a test. Pay the $53.99* if you want that sensor on the same center that watches the doors.

Glass-break and motion are extras people forget were never there. A leftover keypad does not mean the dining-room window is covered. Count openings. Sequoyah Hills houses have more of them than the hallway suggests.

What we will not do with a leftover

We will not promise that every builder panel becomes ADT on the first visit. Some hardware is not worth keeping. We will not take a photo by email as a substitute for the 865 call — the call is the order. We will not file Knox 911 for you. We will not tell a Farragut buyer to use the City of Knoxville form. We will not take a tenant order on a homeowner promotion. We will not hide the 36-month agreement because “the keypad was already there.”

We will not tell you to smash the panel so the next owner starts fresh. That is how you buy drywall and lose a reactivation. We will not tell you a dark screen means the house is unprotected in a way that requires a same-hour emergency. Order on the next open calendar. Same-day or next-day is the usual window in the 19 Knoxville ZIPs and the suburbs we schedule. Panic is not the product. A live agreement is.

Neighborhood patterns we actually see

Farragut 37934 and Hardin Valley 37932: builder leftovers, HOA camera rules, town or county desk, not Knox 911 by default. Photograph the builder panel. Do not assume the option sheet was monitoring.

Sequoyah Hills, Lyons View, Bearden 37919: older professionally installed panels, more windows, more prior-owner accounts that died at closing. Indoor sensors first. Cameras second if the lot wants them.

Fountain City 37918 and Halls 37938: mix of older panels and newer kits. Porch packages. A doorbell is a Complete+ add, not a reason to pull the hall keypad tonight.

Fort Sanders 37916: more leftover kits than builder plats, more condos and houses that changed hands around UT calendars. Homeowner promotion only. Saturday Neyland empties are occupancy. Count the side door.

South Knoxville 37920 and Island Home: walk-outs, sliders, leftover panels in utility rooms instead of hallways. Photograph the utility room too.

Oak Ridge: DOE weekday empties, a different city hall, leftover panels from prior federal-contractor families who moved on a tour cycle. Confirm Oak Ridge Police. Do not invent a fee. Same SafeStreets visit.

Maryville and Alcoa: Blount County, different halls from each other. Leftover panels from Maryville City Schools-area resales. Confirm that office. We do not invent the dollar amount.

The painter, the drywall, and the week you actually move

Closing week is when leftover keypads die. Someone wants the foyer painted. Someone wants the “ugly alarm” gone before photos for a furniture delivery. Someone’s uncle offers to pull it. Stop. Photograph. Call. If the panel has to move six inches for a new paint line, that is an install-day conversation, not a Saturday demolition. A $99 install* that reuses wire is cheaper than a hole you now have to patch before the technician can hang a new one.

If you are living in a hotel for two weeks while the floors come out, say so. We can often time the live date to the night you sleep there. An armed empty renovation is still a useful product if the openings are on. An unarmed leftover during a remodel is a keypad watching dust. Occupancy is the quote question. Architecture is not.

If you bought as a landlord, you can order. Put the property manager on the call list. Register with Knox 911 in the name the city will actually reach. Tenants do not get the homeowner promotional rate. The leftover panel does not change that.

Cellular, KUB, and a panel that only spoke Wi-Fi

Some leftovers were phone-line systems. Some were Wi-Fi kits. Some already have a cellular communicator. The photo helps. The test on install day decides. If KUB drops because vegetation took a line — KUB says trees cause at least half of its outages — a Wi-Fi-only leftover is a brick. Professional monitoring on a cellular path is why you order this product instead of hoping the last owner’s app still loads. Cellular backup on a KUB outage is the longer version. The leftover does not get a pass.

Battery backup in the panel is the other half. A dark keypad after a flicker is a reason to test, not a reason to throw the panel away before we see it. Bring the photo. Let the technician say whether the battery is a $20 part or a reason to replace.

What to do this afternoon

Take the three photos. Call (865) 500-6003. ZIP, house versus condo, door count, cameras yes or no, leftover keypad yes. Hear $53.99*, $63.99*, or $74.99*, the $99 install on many plans, the 36-month agreement, and the registration office. SafeStreets comes out. ADT watches the house. You file Knox 911 if you are in the city, or you confirm Farragut, Oak Ridge, or Maryville if you are not.

How to order is the full process if you do not have a leftover. You probably do if you are reading this. Keep the panel on the wall until we say otherwise. Knoxville homeowners can trust a SafeStreets security system monitored by ADT. A hallway leftover is how a lot of them start — once they stop treating the plastic as the product.
